Niranjan Agar – Dream Place For Fry Lovers

Though not that well known, like its neighbours Mitra Cafe or Allen Kitchen, Niranjan Agar is nowhere behind these two when it comes to what matters the most – food. For the loyalists, the place is known for great, value for money food. If you do not have a problem with the ambiance of a restaurant, let us check out this fry lovers paradise, together.

Niranjan Agar

The signboard of the shop, located just beside the North-Western outlet of Girish Park Metro, says it was established in the year 1922. That makes it 94 years old. As we enter the place, we find it has a old world ambiance, with marble top tables and wooden chairs. You will have to share table with strangers here. The dining space is divided into two rooms, and the cashier/manager sits occupying the door connecting the two. The bigger room is more comfortable and the kitchen is attached to this room. The smaller one is a bit cramped, but the main problem is they peel onions in the room attached to this. They need loads of onions and in few minutes you will find your eyes full of water. Well, you might become emotional or nostalgic eating their fries, and that also can bring tears in your eyes. But I am sure you would never like to shed the drops for those onions.

The menu here is not big. And they have a separate one for Thursdays, when no mutton/goat meat is served. So plan before visiting the place if you love your mutton items. My favourite items here are the Mutton Koftas and Egg Devil, none of which are served on Thursdays. Two large koftas are served per plate, and with the accompanying kasundi (Bengali mustard sauce) and salad, they taste just heavenly. Perfect crispy crumb fried koftas filled with minced meat.

The Egg devil or deviled eggs Bengali style, is another must try item here. They use whole duck eggs (which makes it tastier), which are covered with minced meat and crumb fried. Both the kofta and the devil are priced around 40 bucks and are quite heavy. If you, like me, love vegetarian dishes too, do try their vegetable chop. Again the size is huge and the filling is mainly of beetroot with peanuts and raisins thrown in among other items. The Mutton breast (braised) cutlet is also good, but I am not a big fan of it.

Coming to the gravy items, I am again not a big fan of them here. Although the meat I always find super soft, the gravy items are too sweet for my taste bud. If you love sweet sauces with your meat, you will love the gravy items here. You can order breads to wipe off the gravies.

Coming to their Thursday menu, the special of the day i.e. the Special Fish Cutlet, is a must try. Batter fried cutlet with juicy and fat fish filling. It is of the type we get at Allen Kitchen. Try it, and I am sure you would love it. One thing that should be kept in mind is that you should never pack this item. Or else it will turn soggy and unappetizing. Try it only if you can sit down and eat.

The service here is friendly and fast. All the items are also reasonably priced. If you want a no nonsense good fry joint, Niranjan Agar will be the answer.

Oh my goodness! The Egg devil looks awesome! I never would have thought about a boiled egg, turned into anything else, but a deviled egg with mustard and mayo or chopped for a salad. I know it wouldn’t be just as good, but I have to try making a version of this egg devil! Not sure if I could eat inside a restaurant that will bring tears to my eyes, with the onions, but I’m sure the food is well worth it.

Oh wow! That food looks absolutely delicious. I’ve not had anything like that before. I like when restaurants have small menus. It usually means no matter what you choose to eat, it’s all good!

All of these things look so good! I wish there was a good restaurant around where I live but there just isn’t too much available. Out of the twenty restaurants I can get to in a reasonable amount of time there are maybe 5 decent places but each of them comes with a problem that you have to choose to deal with and most of the time it is bad service.

Oh wow when you said the place for fry, you literally meant the place for all things fried! Who knew such things were even possible. I miss good fried everything and anything. Gluten-free bread crumbs just can’t compete with this.

I love your food photography. Totally makes us want to visit the restaurant to see all the other dishes they make as well.

I’m not sure I’ve ever eaten sweet gravy before. I would probably not be a fan either. Everything else sounds delicious.

I love eggs but I’ve never tried a duck egg before. The Egg devil looks really good! I’ve been trying lots of new foods lately. I just tried fried oysters for the first time last week!
